PYP@AIS - Nurturing lifelong learners

AIS was one of the first IB schools in India and we follow the IB’s Primary Years Programme from Grades 1 to 5. We empower young learners to become problem solvers and independent thinkers. Our programme builds a strong academic foundation, nurtures natural curiosity, encourages students to tackle complex global problems, and cultivates a lifelong love of learning.

Our primary years program is where children build a lifelong love for learning by making things with their hands, singing original tunes, creating their own art masterpieces, writing and staging plays, learning new languages, and building robots that perform all sorts of tasks.

About IB PYP

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) nurtures young students to be active, compassionate, lifelong learners. Through an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework, it fosters conceptual understanding and student-led learning, preparing them for a rapidly changing world.

The inquiry approach to learning

The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in school and in the world beyond. We believe
that asking the right questions is more important than knowing the answers
- the ‘why’ and ‘how’ are more important than the ‘what’.
Encouraged to think critically and to ask why, students become truly excited about learning.

Join us in fostering a love for learning in your child!

The PYP Curriculum

The PYP curriculum framework centers on students as active learners. Guided by six transdisciplinary themes, students develop conceptual understanding and strengthen skills across subject areas such as Language, Math, Social Studies, Science, Arts, and Physical, Social, and Personal Education (PSPE).Co-curricular activities which focus on skill-building and making real-life connections are seamlessly woven into the academic framework. AIS’s curriculum standards are aligned to NCERT, US Common Core, and NGSS, ensuring adaptability.

Enhanced Reading and
Writing Program

Reading is the cornerstone of all learning. We work towards improving each child’s independent reading levels through Fountas and Pinnell’s path-breaking Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) and Guided Reading Program. With an expansive library, author workshops, our annual literature festival, and dedicated reading and writing time, we cultivate a lifelong passion for reading.

Coding, Robotics, and
Design Thinking Program

The future belongs to the makers. In our cutting-edge makerspace, our primary years students build technical skills in STEM, coding, robotics, electronics, and design thinking. Guided by expert engineers and designers, they engage in hands-on projects, collaborate with peers, and showcase their innovations at our Annual MakerFest.

Applied Math Program

At AIS, we empower every child to use math as a tool to make sense of the world around them. Our applied math program includes a math lab with hands-on activities, a math specialist and the Ei Mindspark program for personalized practice. Students explore diverse physical and digital resources weekly, building real-life connections through games, puzzles, and exciting projects.

Foreign Languages Program

Learning new languages broadens students' horizons. Our program offers students a choice between French and Spanish, taught by Skill Live International’s experts. The curriculum focuses on listening, speaking, writing, and reading, with immersive cultural experiences to ensure practical use of the language.

Visual Arts Program

Art is a powerful form of communication and self-expression. Students explore diverse 2D and 3D techniques using materials like paper, paints, inks, wood, and clay. They also learn about art history, famous artists, and visit art galleries. At the end of the year, their work is showcased at our annual art festival, Kala.

Dance Program

Dance nurtures creativity, collaboration, and communication. In partnership with Shiamak Davar Institute for Performing Arts (SDIPA), our program features expert instructors and a modern studio. Students explore Jazz Funk, Bollywood Jazz, and Hip Hop, build stage confidence, and showcase their talents at cultural celebrations and annual performances.

Theatre Program

Theatre allows children to express themselves, enhance their communication skills, and engage audiences through powerful storytelling. Led by trained facilitators, our program includes a modern studio and a curriculum focused on social-emotional learning and diverse theatre practices. Students bring their theatre talents to life at cultural and annual events.

Music Program

Music is a universal language that transcends cultures and deeply impacts children’s development. Conducted by trained practitioners from Shankar Mahadevan Academy (SMA), the program is designed to make children fall in love with Indian music while building singing proficiency. Students present their musical skills at cultural celebrations, grade assemblies, and annual performances.

Sports Program

Sports develop both mind and body, equipping students with essential life skills. With Sportz Village's qualified coaches, Grades 1-2 focus on foundational skills and gamified workouts, while Grades 3-5 play team sports like Basketball, Football, Handball, Frisbee, and more. They participate in sports days and various competitions throughout the year.

Learning Expeditions and
Masterclasses

As inquiries are based on human commonalities that have relevance to everyone in the learning community and beyond, members of the wider community are also invited to play a meaningful role in the inquiry process. Teachers bring in community members as experts and partner with local institutions for masterclasses. Our students also go on field trips to these institutions, allowing them to learn directly from real-world settings, contribute meaningfully, and take action based on their experiences.
