Human Rights Commission

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights promotes universal enjoyment of all human rights by giving practical effect to the will and resolve of the world community as expressed by the United Nations It plays the leading role on human rights issues and emphasizes the importance of human rights at the international and national levels Human rights commission promotes international cooperation for human rights and also stimulates and coordinates action for human rights throughout the United Nations system. It promotes universal ratification and implementation of international standards.

Human rights commission assists in the development of new norms, supports human rights organs and treaty monitoring bodies, responds to serious violations of human rights and undertakes preventive human rights action.

Human rights commission promotes the establishment of national human rights infrastructures, undertakes human rights field activities and operations, and provides education, information advisory services and technical assistance in the field of human rights.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is divided into organizational units, as described below. The Office is headed by a High Commissioner with the rank of Under-Secretary-General.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights is the United Nations official with principal responsibility for United Nations human rights activities, under the direction and authority of the Secretary-General and within the framework of the overall competence, authority and decisions of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on Human Rights. The High Commissioner is appointed by the Secretary-General with the approval of the General Assembly, due regard being paid to geographical rotation, for a fixed term of four years with the possibility of renewal for a further term of four years.
